Daniel,
I have been processing all the things you have written on your blog and some of your posts… getting an overall feeling of what your goals are… and it has lead me to many thoughts that I would like to share with you.
I’m writing this down because I want to be clear and sometimes when talking things can get muddled or off track.
But writing sometimes can leave out the most important, which is feeling and tone… so I write to you that I say ALL of the following as constructive and supportive criticism. Thoughts I want to share with you that you might find useful today or maybe in the future.
PEACE.
In regards to your blog:
- It’s hard to read! :( The background under the words is difficult, makes it very hard on the eyes. Yes it looks cool but it is getting in the way of your goal… getting people to read your stuff. If I had not been personally interested in it I would have never read it.
- Confusion! As far as I can tell you are trying to do 3 things in the same place.
o Businesses and people that do illegal things
o Businesses and people that do legal things that you don’t like
o Art Critic
Business/People Illegal
I think this could be a great service for people on all sides. No one at any level is exempt from a scam or a con. The bad people rely on their prey NOT TALKING because they are embarrassed about being duped. Smoke and mirror tricks don’t work well under a bright light. Focus on the issues and people will step forward when they know they are not alone.
Make your supporting points clean and clear examples.
Supply the contact info to the proper legal agencies and art organizations.
Business/People Legal
This really gets confusing… a vanity gallery and a co-op gallery are VERY different things, neither in theory inherently bad; the devil is in the details.
The big problem on your blog is that you are stating that a certain vanity gallery is scamming people. If that is true then just deal with them under the illegal heading… it’s the people not the business model that is the bigger issue.
Co-op galleries have been around forever, fantastic to awful. They are important in the development of many artists. Co-op’s give up and coming artists a lot of room to grow, fail, evolve, learn client/gallery etiquette… the list goes on and on. The good ones flourish, the weak ones fade away, and the scam ones should be flushed out.
To pick on a weak one is like kicking a puppy to me, what’s the point? :(
I would like to see them flourish… I wonder how you would have critiqued them if you wanted to see them succeed? All your points could still be valid but your tone might be a lot different.
Art Critic
(the LAST thing I would ever want to be LOL)
Here is my take on it: art is SUBJECTIVE and I’m very glad, makes the world go around. It would be pretty boring if everyone liked all the same things I liked… what would we talk about?! I DO find it interesting to know WHY people like/dislike things different from myself; it expands my sensitivities and shows me a bigger world… that is a good thing.
I also learned a long time ago that the work should be able to stand on its own. It’s not common to have a GREAT person who is also a GREAT artist. More like great artist/crappy person or vise/versa.
Your comments as a critic get muddled… sometimes sounds like it’s all based on if you like a person or not. That is what it sounds like.
The comments also have the feeling of a quick first impression, which would be interesting if stated that way, and interesting to follow in the future as you gained more insight and exposure to the artwork and artist… to see if you evolve in your opinions.
You say you want the Hot Springs art scene to go forward, and if that is true I give you this to think about:
- Be supportive of any business that is following fair & legal business practices. If the business looks good to you say so, if it looks like there is room for improvement then state what the improvements should be. Suggesting improvements instead of just telling them how much they suck could lead to much better results.
- Go after the bad seeds. Scams and cons have a LONG history in this town… could keep you busy forever!
On FB today: I saw your posts inquiring about how much someone sold a piece of artwork for and it seemed that the artist and the client were both posting. I have to tell that I thought that was out of line. I wouldn’t tell you the sale price either! I would tell you the tag price and that is it. And if I understand correctly you LIKE this artist!! If this is true then help her don’t hurt her.
Celebrate her sale. Period. Say publicly how much you like and believe in her work. Say how supportive you are for her future and when the time is right for her to have gallery representation you will be the first one there. Anything short of that is hurting her.
I don’t know this artist or client but I’m VERY glad every time I see a happy connection that happened in a gallery and not another artist selling art out the trunk of their car!
And why wouldn’t I tell you the price?:
A few reasons… the tag price is the value of the piece supported by what the artists client market will bear at this time. What the final sale price is could be completely different and is always considered a private matter. Variables that could make it different? : History with the buyer, form of payment, barter, purchasing multiple things at the gallery, payment plans.
To state the details of a sale could devalue the market price of the artwork.
You get my point?
Ok, enough for now, I got to run…. Please read over this a couple times before you respond & remember this is all coming from a positive place :)

I'm going to make this very simple. Some idiot hucksters in some weak galleries pissed me off and now I am going to destroy them. They thought I was a joke so now I am going to show them just how funny I can be when the doors to their Galleries close for good. Thanks for the advice though... even if it did go in one ear and out the other. I hope that we can still be friends.

P.S. You made a good point about the lettering but almost everything else you said just insulted my intelligence. Please don't patronize me again.
what's not to be friends about?
I guess the short of it is I want you to use your good energy to fight the bad :)
a funny thing about ears and what is between... sometimes good thoughts take hold ;)
can't talk now, dealing with the power co for my mom who is right now without any because of the bad storm that blew by here about an hour ago :(

wow! just read your P.S. You thought me patronizing? That was the last thing i was doing. I was just sharing things from my POV. sorry, didn't mean to step on your toes. I have no problem keeping my thoughts to myself, I misread the situation. good luck to you and look forward to seeing you in the gallery in the future. :)

I am using my good energy to fight the bad. I hope you understand that this is not just a Business. It is personal and if somebody with a shitty Gallery wants to disrespect me I have no choice but to destroy them. It's me or them at that point. They are running after me with Knives when I have a submachine gun in my hand. What should I do just let them attack me? If a Gallery owner or Executive Director is stupid enough to disrespect an Art Critic then they deserve to lose their gallery.

Feel free to share your thoughts Ms.Scavo just bare in mind that I already know all of these things. Don't talk to me like this is my first rodeo. I have been working professionally in the Art Industry going on 15 years and I have worked in sales for over a quarter of a century. I know exactly what I am doing. I think you love the hack Galleries so much because they make your Gallery look all the more amazing by comparison. I'll lay off Star Gallery on one condition. Rebecca Stone hast to get on her knees and beg me then wash my feet with her tongue. I'll stop trashing them then but everything else that I've already written will stay up regardless. I'm sorry Dishongh but I don't think you realize how badly this woman has disrespected me. If you ever want me to help someone I will (like Randall Good for example) but I warn you to not get in between me and my enemies. I want blood and I will have it.
Daniel I'm starting to feel like you are trying to bait me and I don't care for it and I don't understand why you would want to.
I was honestly trying to be supportive, giving you my thoughts on what I read.
I don't know anything about you or your history and I was making no assumptions in any direction. I don't know anything about the Star Gallery. I don't know anything about Rebecca Stone.
My comments were based on what you made public. period. I thought you might find it useful in some way.
I have a much better understanding now.
PEACE

You're right. I'm sorry I didn't mean to blow up on you. I've been under a lot of stress lately. 1 1/2 years of death threats tends to make a person paranoid. Everyone's wanting to meet me in person and I don't know who I can trust.
apology accepted.
get some sleep, eat some food, chill.
