i never charged any artist to show at 404-B. it was always totally free to the artist. i paid for everything, including promotions, wine and food, cups and napkins and trash bags, etc. of course it was in my home so i also paid the rent and utilities and for the light bulbs and toilet paper and furniture and extension cords and computers and jamboxes and paint and soap and etc. plus i almost always did all the cleaning up when it was over. plus i usually either helped hang the show or did it all myself (and many times because the artist would be late bringing the work, like dropping it here the day before and many times even the day of the show, and then they wouldn't be able to get off work to hang it themselves or whatever so i had to do it if we were gonna have a show). when i was opening in january of 2006 i asked several artists what kind of deals the other galleries were making. according to everybody i talked to, most galleries around here were taking a 40% commission. some were getting a little more, like 50%, and even one was said to have been taking 60%. so i and the artists i was working with agreed on me taking a 40% cut and i stayed with that until i closed last year.
